The Synoptic Arctic Survey (SAS) is a researcher-driven initiative that seeks to achieve the baseline understanding of the fundamental structure and function of the linked carbon-ecosystem-physical systems in the Arctic Ocean.
More than 15 cruises from 12 different nations collected a set of parameters across the Arctic Ocean in the late summers of 2021 and 2022. Compilation of the data will allow an expanded characterization of Arctic circulation, hydrography, carbon cycle, ocean acidification and marine ecosystems and a unique baseline to track climate change and its impacts.
The SAS synthesis workshop will be to discuss how to move forward with synthesis of data and of results. The goals are to overview the cruise results, establish networks of archived data sets, and identify teams to address the key SAS research questions and outline and draft synthesis papers. The workshop also would provide an opportunity for teams of modelers and observationalists to identify projects that would use the SAS data in modeling efforts that expand understanding of the Arctic system
